Inspired by Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name, the series opens with a voiceover by Steven (Michiel Huisman), who we will later come to know. The trope of the rundown house, carrying within it a legacy of past glory and a lurking, sinister presence from that same past, may have been adapted for the screen as a part of the horror genre too many times to count, but it can be said with some confidence that no one has ever quite explored it like Mike Flanagan does in The Haunting of Hill House (2018).
